Firebird Medical

Firebird Medical is a multidisciplinary R&D company based in Ireland. Since 2008 the company has provided engineering support to small and large medical device companies. Firebird helps its customers bring new products on the market by offering services from concept design to prototyping, customised tooling design for manufacture and process revision.

The company specialises in:

  • design of biomedical textiles for implantable medical devices using a variety of textile technologies
  • improvement of manufacturing processes, i.e. efficient manufacturing methods for the self-expandable metallic stents (SEMS)
  • wireless remote patient monitoring solutions, i.e. motion detection algorithms.

Firebird‘s design capabilities include customised textile equipment to ensure adequate processing of biomaterials such as metallic wires (Nitinol, stainless steel), Nylon, Polyester, PEEK (Polyetheretherketone). The company applies advanced textile engineering expertise and clinical application experience to determine suitable materials, construction and textile technology to meet the new device requirements.

Firebird Medical has developed and patented innovative Telecare technology for the detection and prevention of falls in people with mobility impairment conditions. The technology has been evaluated in non-critical situations and is currently available for commercial validation in care-homes and assisted living facilities (see products page).

CEO: John Shanahan

John has managed small and large scale product developments with multi-national market leaders such as Beiersdorf AG, BSN Medical and Fastform Research. John brings high level of hands-on expertise in technical trouble-shooting, fault analysis and modifying off-the-self components to meet new requirements.

In 2008, John co-founded Firebird Medical to create technology solutions for the emerging Telecare and Telehealth market.

CTO: Camelia Shanahan

As a co-founder of Firebird Medical, Camelia brings in her expertise spanning software development, medical textiles, technical fabrics and fashion knitwear design and development. Previous to this, Camelia provided engineering and design consultancy services to textile companies throughout Europe.

She holds a BSc. (Hons) in Textile Engineering (Knitting Technology) and a BSc. (Hons) in Software Development.
